IHM
This regulation aims to quantify and reduce CO2 emissions from shipping and will create a new kind of benchmarking system in Europe. In June 2013, the European Commission proposed a strategy for progressively integrating maritime emissions into the EU's policy for reducing its domestic GHG emissions.
For each ship exceeding 5,000 GT, fuel consumption and carbon emissions on all voyages to, from and between EU ports while the ship is at sea as well as at berth must be reported.
MRV
Monitoring and Reporting
Ship owners will have to monitor the following parameters on a per-voyage basis:
-
Port of departure and port of arrival, including the date and hour of departure and arrival
-
Amount and emission factor for each type of fuel consumed in total CO2 emitted
-
Distance travelled
-
Time spent at sea
-
Cargo carried
-
Transport work
In addition to the companies reporting annually aggregated figures for the parameters, the data is to be used to calculate and report average energy efficiency.
The basis for the calculation of CO2 emissions will be the fuel consumption for voyages starting or terminating at any EU port. Fuel consumption shall be determined and calculated using one of the following methods:
-
Bunker Delivery Note (BDN) and periodic stocktakes of fuel tanks
-
Bunker fuel tank monitoring on board
-
Flow meters for applicable combustion processes
-
Direct CO2 emission measurements
Verification
Accredited verifiers will have three key tasks:
1. To verify ship-specific monitoring plans (completeness, accuracy, relevance and conformity)
2. To verify that the annual ship-specific emission reports comply with the monitoring plans
3. To verify that the figures contained in the annual ship-specific emission reports are accurate
Presently, CTI is in the process of becoming an accredited verifier for the EU MRV regulation.
Verification is an interactive process aiming to continuously improve the ship operator's MRV management and control systems. The process follows a two-stage approach:
-
Analysis of the design and implementation of the ship operator's MRV management system (organisation, procedures, IT) and control system, identification of risk areas, and assessment of whether the procedures conform with the Monitoring Plan and the EU MRV Regulation
-
Detailed testing and analysis of fuel data and other relevant information, independent technical review, materiality analysis, verification opinion and document of compliance.

Feasibility Studies and Energy Efficiency Analysis

Eliminate the use of the heating coils located at the fuel storage tank, this takes away the need to maintain fuel at high temperature at all time, thus achieve energy saving and lower maintenance cost.
Heat energy is easily wasted due to cold temperature between hull and seawater. Traditionally, heating coils are widely used on ship operations, but it is known for low efficiency of heat transfer, and also carry many maintenance issues over the years. This is why Shifter was created to solve these problems and enable a more energy efficient, low cost method for shipowners to heat up their oil.
The purpose of this system:

This procedure repeats automatically every hour. It constantly circulates hot oil though the system.
-
Transfer heated fuel from settling/service tank to the main fuel storage tank through the Shifter Pump at the additional fuel line
-
Example: A vessel that consumes 1MT of fuel every hour:
-
Shifter will take app. 2MT of hot oil from settling tank back to the storage tank during the first 45mins of every hour
-
The heated fuel is then to mix with the cold oil around the suction bell mouth area inside the storage tank
-
When the mixed fuel reaches a transferrable temperature, the system will automatically stop the Shifter Pump
-
Thereafter the Transfer Pump will start to take out app. 3-4MT of warm oil back into the settling tank (This happens at the remaining 15mins of an hour).
How it works:

1) Fuel storage tank is no longer required to maintain at high temperature, little heat loss or escape through hull structure to seawater. It also eliminates the possibility of nearby cargo being damaged when temperature is high
2) Higher thermal recycle efficiency results in fuel saving.
3) For "Slow Steam" operation, it requires no extra boiler, as the tank will no longer required heating coils. Mixed heated fuel is in a short staying cycle and being circulated around all time.
4) Less heating coils and smaller boiler capacity result in lower cost at new building stage, as well very low maintenance in the long run.
5) Fuel oil sludge is decreased by half at the storage tank and servicing tank. Sludge created at servicing tank can also be periodically transferred back to storage tank.
6) Much less corrosion issue at the ballast tank.
Benefits:
Inert Gas Generator & Ballast Water Treatment System
Coldharbour Marine Limited, based in UK can trace its origins back more than 35 years. Coldharbour is dedicated to provide practical & innovative solutions to technical problems in the marine ind
Simple, Small Footprint, Low Consumption BWTS System composition: IGG + BWTS
The Coldharbour Sea Guardian™ is the first 3rd generation Inert Gas Generator in the world, any experienced inert gas engineer would quickly feel comfortable operating it. It generates an ultra clean(zero zoot), low oxygen(0.2%) inert gas that was originally designed for tankers, LNG & LPG applications. The system is very compact, stable and designed to be maintenance free in a ship's operation.
The Coldharbour Marine GLD™Ballast Water Treatment System is the one and only "in-tank" treatment system in the market. By utilizing the Sea Guardian™ IGG as a core technology, it treats the ballast water any time during voyage instead of at port operation. It uses the inert gas output which links to the specially designed Gas Lift Diffusion(GLD) pipe assemblies inside the ship's ballast tanks.

How it works:
By Injecting 0.2% oxygen IG into ballast tanks:
- Lowers oxygen level in water
- Lowers PH level at the same time
- Creates an ultra sonic shockwave that disrupts bacteria cell physically
- Provides continuous fluid-dynamic circulation
It is the most suitable solution for large vessels such as VLCC, VLOC and LNG/LPG carriers.

The only "IN TANK" treatment system:
1) It is to guarantee not to disrupt port operations.
2) Ships arrive treated and ready to discharge with no risk of re-growth even on the longest voyages.
3) Technology works regardless of temperature, salinity or suspended solids - 100% reliability.
